Tortoise Live from the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor [Listen 1:25:54] S02 Ep08 (Part 3 of 3)

S02 Ep08 (Part 3 of 3) - Tortoise Live in Ann Arbour

Interview Date: April 27, 2012 @8pm EDT

Bands and Musicians Battle Royale (Part 1 - The Attack of the Classic Rock)

It’s time to play battle of the bands. Choose which band or artist you prefer from the sides given, and back up your choice with reasons why. Debate with your friends when you've run out of religion and politics. The battles are obviously more fun with more people involved. Come up with your own for the next battle (you can post battles & your results in the comments). We start off with the most classic example and build from there. Enjoy.

The Beatles versus The Stones

The classic battle. The introspective artists vs. the bad boys. Tom Wolfe is reputed to have said "The Beatles want to hold your hand, but the Stones want to burn down your town."

Beatles versus Bob Dylan

Addictive melodies vs. snarling lyrical genius.

The Stones versus Bob Dylan

Dylan challenged the bad boy throne by going electric. Et tu Judas?

The Stones versus The Kinks

Before you say "No Contest" in favour of the Stones, consider that the Kinks had a resurgence

S01 Ep07(3 of 3) – Giving Captain Sensible an evil look or “making my dreams come true…”

A Must Listen for All Marc Bolan, Syd Barrett, and Captain Sensible Fans!!!!!

Interview Date: October 13, 2011 @11am EDT

Special Guest: Captain Sensible (a.k.a. Ray Burns) the singer, song writer, guitarist (sometimes keyboardist) of the Damned. In this podcast we talk to the Captain about Bernie Bubbles, going on Tour with Marc Bolan of T-Rex, almost going in the studio with Syd Barrett and how the Captain came to wear his beret.  We get into his sudden solo fame as a solo artist and his crazy videos and as they say "much much more". One of my favorite interviews and a must listen.

I think the early eighties and the MTV generation might be one of the hardest periods for an artist to come out of. Shaking off the shackles of a successful video that had heavy rotation, I think, can be one of the hardest things for an artist to overcome. It could be the visuals that seem to nail both you and them down to a very specific time, or song. Much like a successful sitcom

S01 Ep07 (2 of 3) - Wearing the Red Beret with the Captain

Interview Date: October 13, 2011 @11am EDT

Special Guest: Captain Sensible (a.k.a. Ray Burns) the singer, song writer, guitarist (sometimes keyboardist) of the Damned. He has also had unbelievable success with his solo career by completely changing direction and going into Pop and Rap (always remaining fresh). He has been part of the biggest Punk movement of all time with recording songs like: “New Rose,” “Jet boy, Jet Girl,” “Neat Neat Neat,” “Love song,” “Smash It Up (Part 1 & 2),” “Waiting for the Blackout,”and the epic “Curtain Call.” He was a leading figure during the MTV Pop era with the song “Wot” and even had a surprise number one hit with the song “Happy Talk.”

“History is written by the victors.” Winston Churchill

When did Punk start: Who knows? Some say with The Stooges some say it was the Kingsmen. I’ve even heard a strong argument for Hank Williams Sr. But for our purposes concerning the Punk invasion of 1976-1977,

Season 1 Episode 2 (1 of 2): Get out your ruler we are here with Bob Croutchman

Whether it’s Neil Young singing about his roadie and friend Bruce Berry in his landmark tune, “Tonight’s the Night” or Charlie Parker naming a classic Bebop tune after his drug dealer, “Moose the Mooche,” musicians have realized that it’s the people in the background that are often the ones with the interesting lives. Professionals who not only drive the buses, make the costumes, or run the soundboards, but also help give context and life lessons to the artist’s work. Aside from making stuff happen behind the scenes, these over-looked workers sometimes take centre stage. Take for example Lemmy; did you know that before he got famous as the lead singer of Motorhead that he was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix? He is not the only one either. David Gilmour was a roadie for Pink Floyd before they asked him to join them as lead guitarist. In fact, Noel Gallagher(Oasis), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedy’s), Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) and even Henry Rollins (Black Flag) all got their start as roadies. 1
