Drinking scotch, smoking cigarettes, and hanging out with Feldman, Rothko, and Budd [Listen 37:00]S02 Ep11 (Part 1 of 2)

S02 Ep11 (Part 1 of 2) - Drinking Scotch, smoking cigarettes and hanging out with Feldman, Rothko and BuddS02 Ep11 (Part 1 of 2) - Drinking Scotch, smoking cigerettes and hanging out with Feldman, Rothko and Budd

Interview Date: May 3, 2012 @8pm EDT

Special Guest: Harold Budd is an American composer and poet who is known for his soft pedal piano style and his ground-breaking projects.  In this podcast we talk about how he started his training, meeting Morton Feldman and Mark Rothko, some of his earliest albums, and much more.

Bands and Musicians Battle Royale (Part 2 - Get Ultra-Violent with the Punk  Rock Legends)

We love contrast, so I thought I might balance out my calm and sophisticated audio interview with Harold Budd with some mindless, weaselly ultra-violence in Part 2 of Battle Royale (the Punks fight back). So just like before, we are asking you which bands you prefer. Don't expect a clean fight though, this group of misfits may not look so tough to you, but they are wiry, good at cheating, and know how to smash it up. Remember this battle is best served cold in a med/small size group, and oh yeah "don't forget to beat on the biggest brat with your baseball bat."

We are starting off big!

The Sex Pistols versus The Clash

These two have been battling it out since the beginning, and there never has been a clear winner.

Mickey Hart gets cosmic with the Mysterium Tremendum – And that’s just the way it is!

S01 Ep10 (Part 1 of 1) Mickey Hart - And that's just the way it is..

Interview Date: June 7, 2012 @2pm EDT

Special Guest: (Audio) Mickey Hart - is a percussionist, author,  producer and ethnomusicologist who’s done more for drums and drumming than I think almost any other human on the planet.  His scope, reach and inclusion know no bounds; he is someone who has been searching, experimenting and expanding minds for over 45 years. Starting off in 1967 with the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart has gone on to reshape and reintroduce human beings to their most basic self. His newest trip “Mysterium Tremendum” might be his most ambitious project to date; taking people on a journey through the vastness of the infinite universe. By taking sounds that were created billions of years ago, Mickey Hart and the Mickey Hart Band are taking these sound, mixing it with the technology of today, and delivering it to us in the most tripped out world/trance music way.  Believe me when I say that this will no doubt be some of the most exciting and interesting music that you’ve heard in a long time.

Special Guest: (Print) Heinz Rohrer CEO and Owner of Thorens Turntables (Part 2 of 2)- Started in 1883 by Hermann Thorens in Switzerland,  the company Thorens and their Phonographs (Turntables) have been innovating and pushing High-end audio into the 21 Century. Recently they have been designing some of the most elegant, beautifully sounding, and desirable record players on the market today.  I was lucky enough to land a rare interview with Mr. Rohrer and he was kind enough to answer my questions (Translated into English. His native tongue is Swiss German). http://www.thorens.com/

Thorens Turntable Interview - GoingThruVinyl's conversation with Heinz Rohrer (Continued)

GTV - There are three turntables in particular that I would really like to talk about. All three are some of the most stunningly beautiful record players on the market today. They are really a feat in industrial design brilliance; in fact I’m not sure whether to listen to it or put it on the wall as fine art.

Heinz Rohrer - You will miss something if you don’t listen to them. But allow me to mention something at this place. Thorens was (and in certain areas still is) considered as a conservative company. When I took the lead in 2003, I was forced to make a change due to several reasons. I was convinced that I have to go with the time and develop turntables with a touch of design.

Johnny Winter Interview [Audio] plus Heinz Rohrer (CEO of Thorens Turntables [Print]) [Listen 26:42] – S02 Ep09 Climbing Up Curtains and Cutting Off Fingers with Johnny Winter

S02 Ep09 (1 of 1) Climbing Up a Curtain with Howlin' Wolf and Johnny Winter

Interview Date: May 4, 2012 @2pm EDT

Special Guest: (Audio) Johnny Winter (Part 1 of 1) - Johnny Winter is one of the biggest names in blues; this Texas born blues guitarist has played with all the greats and was a leader in the 1960's blues revival. He has produced and played on four records for Muddy Waters and one for Sonny Terry (often winning a Grammy). He blew people away with his performance at Woodstock, and has jammed with people like Jimi Hendrix, Michael Bloomfield, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's been reported that he received the biggest signing contract and advancement ever given to an artist at the time. Winter's impact runs deep. He was gracious enough to give GoingThruVinyl an exclusive interview about his latest release and offer a peek into the history of the blues. http://www.johnnywinter.net/

On May 1, 2012 he released his newest album "Roots" (latest release in seven years), a record that brings together many of the artists and songs that he grew up listening to and admired. Winter and I cover the tracks on "Roots" and talk about the blues men that he has known (both on the album and throughout his career). Winter, known as not being one of the most talkative persons, got pretty animated at points in this interview and revealed some amazing stories and insight into the blues legends from a insider perspective.

Special Guest: (Print) Heinz Rohrer CEO and Owner of Thorens Turntables (Part 1 of 2)- Started in 1883 by Hermann Thorens in Switzerland,  the company Thorens and their Phonographs (Turntables) have been innovating and pushing High-end audio into the 21 Century. Thorens Turntable Interview - GoingThruVinyl's conversation with Heinz Rohrer

I have been thinking about turntables and which one I would buy in today’s market for quite some time. The list of excellent turntable manufacturers is long, and the technological breakthroughs and improvements over the past couple of years are nothing short of extraordinary. The advancements in technology, design, quality, and jaw-dropping style that you can get these days from the high-end stereo market compared to ten years ago is greater than imagined. Which brings me to this company and the turntables that impresses me the most these days: the Swiss brand “Thorens” and their new acrylic turntable lines (TD 2015, TD 2035) and the TD 309.

I was lucky enough to get a written interview with the CEO of Thorens, Heinz Rohrer. We talk about what design decisions go into making a Thorens turntable and their long history of their company being a key component in refining the classic record player.

GTV - Thorens’ history goes all the way back to Switzerland in 1883 and its musical roots were planted right from the beginning. The late 19th century was a time when Swiss engineering had established itself as being known for their quality and craftsmanship with precision made objects like watches and clocks. Can you tell me what kind of man Hermann Thorens was, and about how the company came into existence?

Heinz Rohrer - Mr. Thorens was born some 3 or 4 generations before I was born, therefore I did not know him well (joke) and documents from this time are not available anymore in detail. He founded his family business 1883 with the purpose of manufacturing musical boxes and movements. The place he lived with his family and where he founded his company, the region called Jura at the French part of Switzerland is still known as cluster with many watch making and precision engineering companies. No doubt he was known as an excellent entrepreneur running a leading company in the region at that time.

Tortoise Live from the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor [Listen 1:25:54] S02 Ep08 (Part 3 of 3)

S02 Ep08 (Part 3 of 3) - Tortoise Live in Ann Arbour

Interview Date: April 27, 2012 @8pm EDT

Bands and Musicians Battle Royale (Part 1 - The Attack of the Classic Rock)

It’s time to play battle of the bands. Choose which band or artist you prefer from the sides given, and back up your choice with reasons why. Debate with your friends when you've run out of religion and politics. The battles are obviously more fun with more people involved. Come up with your own for the next battle (you can post battles & your results in the comments). We start off with the most classic example and build from there. Enjoy.

The Beatles versus The Stones

The classic battle. The introspective artists vs. the bad boys. Tom Wolfe is reputed to have said "The Beatles want to hold your hand, but the Stones want to burn down your town."

Beatles versus Bob Dylan

Addictive melodies vs. snarling lyrical genius.

The Stones versus Bob Dylan

Dylan challenged the bad boy throne by going electric. Et tu Judas?

The Stones versus The Kinks

Before you say "No Contest" in favour of the Stones, consider that the Kinks had a resurgence

Bonus Material: Miracle Condition (Opening Act) [Listen 35:41] S02 Ep08(Part 2 of 3)

Miracle Condition Live in Ann Arbour S02 Ep08 (part 2 of 3)

Interview Date: April 27, 2012 @8pm EDT

Miracle Condition Live in Ann Arbor, Recorded April 27, 2012

This week as a bonus I thought I would post the opening act of the Tortoise show, Miracle Condition live at "the Blind Pig" in Ann Arbor. This Chicago based band was unknown to me when I went to record Tortoise, but when I heard Miracle Condition play, I was really impressed (which doesn't happen often at first listen). Having set up the recorder for Tortoise,  I realize I captured a great band in their early career, and I wanted to share that with the GTV audience. The whole set is provided here, so with Tortoise, you have the whole evening's performance. We have a link to pick up their latest album (on RTI HQ 180 gram Red Vinyl!).

Miracle Condition's bio:

Miracle Condition is a trio featuring U.S. Maple guitarist Mark Shippy and drummer Pat Samson, with Matt Carson on guitar and vocals. The group formed in late 2006 and quickly morphed their more experimental leanings into their own brand of cinematic, illustrative spacegaze. Where U.S. Maple was known for deconstructing rock music, Miracle Condition traffics those images seen in the moments between sleeping and waking, pushing the sonic envelope into the dream world. Layers of guitar, sheets of percussion and fragile, glasslike voices from Shippy and Carson hint at elements of the psychedelic and shoegaze genres. In the live setting Miracle Condition is shatteringly loud - the droning interrupted by Samson's uniquely expressive drum patterns. With their forthcoming release on the Tizona label, Miracle Condition will undoubtedly command attention from anyone within earshot.

I highly recommend this band and their album; I think they could be the next big thing. Check them out: http://www.miraclecondition.com/
